On December 12, 2014, David Rayfield, a Pope McGlamry partner, together with Tracee Benzo of Hasner Law, co-chaired the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association’s 2014 Holiday Workshop. During this conference, Mike McGlamry, also a firm partner, presented on the firm’s mass tort practice and discussed how other attorneys could involve themselves with it. Additional Pope McGlamry attorneys participating included Timothy Morrison, Jay Hirsch, M.J. Blakely, Caroline McGlamry and Clark Rosengarten. Participants there heard about the experiences and best practices of acclaimed trial lawyers and learned the perspectives of Georgia Supreme Court Justices and Superior Court and State Court judges as well as that of Emmy-nominated TV star and former Fulton County Juvenile Court Chief Presiding Judge Glenda Hatchett.
Mr. Rayfield kicked off the event with opening remarks before other practitioners discussed important issues such as medical malpractice liability, commercial carrier liability, mediation, impeachment evidence, legislative developments, workers’ compensation, liability apportionment, case publicity, privilege, liens and discovery.
The superior and state court judicial panel, moderated by Mr. Rayfield, discussed the ethical challenges often encountered by Georgia trial attorneys. Sitting on that panel were the Honorable Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Gail Tusan, the Honorable Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams, the Honorable DeKalb County State Court Judge Dax Lopez and the Honorable Dougherty County Superior Court Judge Denise Marshall. Subsequently, participants heard three Georgia Supreme Court justices share their perspective on professionalism. Mr. Rayfield also moderated that panel which included the Honorable Justice Carol Huntstein, the Honorable Justice Harold Melton and the Honorable Justice Keith Blackwell.
Later, Mr. McGlamry presented on the firm’s mass tort practice. Mr. McGlamry, who is co-lead counsel for the Wright Conserve hip litigation discussed those proceedings as well as developments within the Stryker hip litigation whose leadership committee he sits on, the firm’s leadership prosecuting the Wright Profemur litigation, the DePuy ASR and Pinnacle proceedings, the Zimmer Durom litigation, the NFL concussion litigation on whose leadership committee he sits, the Takata airbag litigation, the Pradaxa, Risperdal, Actos and Xarelto proceedings and the many available opportunities for trial attorneys to become involved with these cases.
