ATLANTA, GEORGIA – June 9, 2011 – Pope McGlamry (“PMKM”), a prominent Georgia law firm specializing in civil litigation, has teamed up with one of the most prominent trial firms in California, Panish, Shea & Boyle, LLP, to prosecute claims against DePuy Orthopaedics and Johnson & Johnson resulting from their defective hip replacement device, the DePuy ASR.
In September of 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, acquired by Johnson & Johnson, issued a voluntary recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing Platforms. The defective design of the ASR hip replacement cup, which is shallower than similar hip replacement devices, is responsible for many of the product’s problems, such as failing to affix to the bone and shedding metal particles and debris into the body as they wear. As a result, a second corrective hip replacement surgery is often required to replace the defective hip device soon after implant.
Claims filed in California are pending against DePuy and Johnson in the Superior Court of the State of California and are coordinated before Judge Richard A. Kramer in San Francisco as part of Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding No. 4649. The Honorable Peter J. Polos (Ret.), a partner at Panish, Shea & Boyle LLP, is a member of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in this JCCP litigation. After many months of review, research and conversations with other trial lawyers with cases involving the DePuy ASR, Pope McGlamry has determined that the JCCP is a very favorable venue in which to prosecute claims involving the DePuy ASR. This arrangement with Brian Panish and Judge Polos will greatly enhance our cases against DePuy and Johnson & Johnson related to the DePuy ASR and increase Pope McGlamry’s visibility in mass tort litigation.
